No more fluff?
“’It is the Spirit Who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.”
John 6: 63
This is an incredible chapter if dare read it. It starts where Jesus is working miracles and the people want to take Him by force and make Him king. His response was to withdraw. There is so much just on that point we could say. He has the crowd. Think about it. Now understand that His ways are not our ways and His thoughts are not ours. He is in a place of great influence and impact and what does He do? He offends the people! Wow! Even His disciples grumble.
In big ministry the goal is not to offend to ensure people come and bring more people. Jesus on the other hand seeks to expose the sinner’s heart and lead them to repentance.
“For too long we have sought to make ungodly people godly, without converting them from sin. We have tried to make immoral people moral, through words, actions and votes. But it won’t work! It can’t work. Those who are accustomed to evil cannot do good.”1
We are surrounded by nice inspirational messages that make you feel good and even how to walk right, but they don’t bring the real and necessary change. We live in a “make me feel good” society. Yet the moral decay continues, and the church is called to be salt and light. Hell should be terrified when we wake up in the morning. Instead we watch as society slowly strips the church of our rights. If we don’t wake up soon, we will be forced at great price to decide, Jesus or the world!
I have posted a painting of John Wycliffe so that you would remember how a price was paid to get the Word to you. He fought to see the Word translated into the common language, so the ordinary person could read it and be changed by it. He sowed the seeds that birthed a reformation.
Jesus did not come to be politically correct or speak nice words. He spoke words of life that we spiritually comprehended. When we were created we were made spiritual beings with a soul (mind, will and emotions) and given a body. Our spirit is called to dominate over our soul. At the fall, Adam and Eve chose to obey their soul. Since that time mankind has walked under obedience to the soul. Romans eight describes to laws on the earth; the law of sin and death and the law of the Spirit and life.
The law of sin and death is also the law of survival. Look around and everything is bound by it. Survival of the fittest! It is all about doing whatever it takes to survive including walking over others. The only one who matters is you. The Law of the Spirit is the opposite. When we get to Heaven we will discover just how Heaven is so totally opposite to how we do things on the earth. Instead of living to get, you live to give. Instead of who must die in order that I might live, it is all about me laying my life down that you might live.
Scientists today seek to discover “life.” We talk about it suddenly happening in some slime pool. But in Him is life and according to John one, the Father encapsulated it in His Word and Jesus was the Living Word. So, when He spoke it was not some beautiful and inspirational message but life. His words carried the force of life within them. They did whatever He sent them to do. Talk about power packed words!
In so many churches because the Holy Spirit has left them, we hear inspirational words that may even touch the soul but have no impact on the spirit. They don’t offend hell out of you or bring you to real truth! They are politically correct words.
I recall talking to some ladies several years ago and they brought up the Salem witch trials and how people were falsely accused and sentenced because it was what the crowd wanted. The powers that be had predetermined what they wanted and manipulated the people to agree with them. They spoke how if they lived back then they would have stood up and done something! Really? Look at what is happening! It is not about the rule of law but the rule of what the people say is right. Men act according to what is right in their eyes and some even their heart. But mankind is inherently evil without Him. Even our best is filthy rags and contaminated with sin. We act according to what is best for us. To stand up with an opposite opinion is too costly.
We even use the terms, “What Would Jesus Do!” We assume nice and sweet Jesus, Who is of course love would act according to what society says is right! Really?
Jesus’ words were life. Think about it! They carried the life that was in Him and all who received His words, were changed and that life brought them to life. He came to destroy the works of the enemy. His words were hell destroying, devil defeating and man offending. But they brought real change. His words were rich in mercy but because of the holiness and life they contained that also contained judgment.
“I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness. If anyone hears My sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.”
John 12: 46-48
Wow! His words will judge. His words will not return to Him void! His words are life and to all that will receive them they are life to them but those who reject it is death.
Listen to what Paul wrote in the context of preaching the Word…
“For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; to the one an aroma from death to death and to the other an aroma from life to life.”
2 Corinthians 2: 15, 16
When is the last time people got offended and say, “you message stinks?” We are to preach the Word of Life. His life in us should flow from us and just like Him it should destroy the works of the enemy.
Revivals don’t come from people preaching nice inspirational messages but believers boldly preaching the Word of Life! As long as we remain content on the feel-good gospel it will remain, and the moral decay will continue. This generation will continue to perish, and we will continue to fall asleep. But, if we awaken and crave the Word of Life once again and preach that Word, the life in the Word will begin to change things. We must get spiritually hungry and discerning! We need the real spiritual beef and not the frozen mystery meat. If we don’t get offended at what is happening and see that if we don’t make a stand who well, then God help this country. But if we His people will cry out for mercy in judgment and ask for souls, may He in His rich mercy will visit us once again. If we will humble ourselves and receive His Words and seek His face, maybe He will come once again and heal our land!
Maybe, we need some new Wycliffe’s! Brave heroes who will stand up and be voice in this generation. We do need another reformation.
